Transforming a Lakefront Home: A Full-Scale Remodel on Mona Lake
Nestled on the shores of Mona Lake, this once-modest lakeside retreat has been completely reimagined through a full-scale remodel that blends thoughtful design with major structural transformation. Our team took on the challenge of not just renovating the home, but redesigning it from the top down—literally.
Starting from the Top: Roof Removal & Structural Redesign
The project began with a bold move: removing the roof entirely. This allowed us to reconfigure the structure from the inside out, improving ceiling heights, layout flow, and energy efficiency while preparing the home for its dramatic transformation. By opening up the framework, we were able to address structural inefficiencies and create a more cohesive, livable floor plan—one that better suited the homeowners’ lifestyle and maximized lake views.
A Kitchen That Belongs at the Heart of the Home
One of the most significant changes was relocating the kitchen from the second floor to the first. While this may seem unconventional, the original layout placed the kitchen upstairs—away from the main living and entertaining spaces. We designed a brand-new kitchen on the first floor, complete with custom cabinetry, modern appliances, and direct access to the outdoor patio for seamless indoor-outdoor entertaining. The new location not only made sense spatially, but it brought the heart of the home to the level where family and guests naturally gather.
Creating a Luxurious Primary Suite
With the kitchen move opening up the second floor, we were able to design a brand-new primary suite that takes full advantage of elevated lake views. The suite now features a spacious bedroom with panoramic windows, a spa-inspired en suite bathroom, and a walk-in closet. It offers a peaceful retreat just steps away from the water, with natural light pouring in and a layout tailored for comfort and privacy.
Windows, Doors & Light: A New Chapter
To bring the entire home up to modern standards and create a seamless connection between indoors and outdoors, we replaced every window and door. Larger, more energy-efficient windows now frame beautiful views of Mona Lake and allow natural light to flood the interior. Sliding and French doors enhance lake access and improve the home’s overall flow and livability.
Adding Functionality with a New Garage
Another key part of the remodel was the addition of a new garage—an essential upgrade for Michigan’s seasons. The garage not only provides ample space for vehicles and storage, but it also improves curb appeal and rounds out the functionality of the redesigned home.
